Studio 1 Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Studio Photos
The top right of the photo shows the concrete bricks drying just after being placed upon our arrival at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, completing the outside wall of the studio.
This photo was taken right before the studio monitor platform was completed.
We used this Yamaha O2R console for playback and headphone monitoring when we recorded the first band to use the studio: "Jano."
This photo shows the initial drum microphone setup. After doing many audio tests, we found that placing the drums in front of the studio glass was the best recording position. The glass was put in one hour before the drums were set up.

3/5/2011 Radio Silent Session
Here’s more news from Radio Silent guitarist Mark Daterman:
The overdub/mix session on Saturday for the new Radio Silent release went very well. Max snapped out a nice maraca track on “The Before,” and then I was ready to go on the Hammond B-3. Unfortunately, there were technical difficulties on that vintage chunk of wood-plus, so i ended up on a synth, and we shortly knocked out the last overdub for “Lost In The Tall Grass,” which features a veritable choir of Musso-produced guitars.
The mix went great, but we didn’t have time for the jam piece, so it’s quite possible that this will be a new double single, “The Before” b/w “Lost In The Tall Grass.” Stay tuned, as they used to say, to that station. And btw in oldspeak b/w means “backed with,” as in the A and B side of a 45 RPM record. Glad to be able to put out singles: strike while the iron is hot!
Radio Silent mix session with Robert Musso at Orange Music
Here’s great news from Radio Silent’s guitarist Mark Daterman:
We will be recording the last tracks on two songs for the forthcoming third Radio Silent album (as yet untitled, probably due in early autumn 2011), and a very soon to be forthcoming EP. We’ll be laying down a brief Hammond organ part on the song “Lost In The Tall Grass,” and a short percussion part on the tune “The Before.” Hopefully, we will then be able to mix both tracks, as well as an instrumental jam track, to prepare for mastering by Tom Ruff at Asbury Media. I will be playing the keyboard part, vocalist/drummer Terry aka “Max” Kestel will play percussion. In other EP news, we’ve been discussing cover art possibilities with NYC painter/photographer James Isherwood, whose work is sublime and should be checked out by all. No definite image yet, but stay tuned.
Thanks,
Mark Daterman
Recording Session with Ron Carter
On Monday, February 7, 2011 Robert Musso produced a recording session with legendary Jazz Bassist, Ron Carter, for Bootsy Collins’ new CD at the Institute of Audio Research’s studio. Students and Alumni of IAR helped with the session. Guess who came by the studio? Label artist Mark Daterman from Radio Silent!
Ron Carter’s session was shorter than the set-up. He arrived at the studio ready to record with his upright bass. He listened to the track once and then he let the music flow through his fingers. It was perfect on the first take and we recorded two more tracks. It was a smooth, quick, and pleasant experience.
For those of you who may not know who Ron Carter is, he has recorded over 2,000 albums which make him the most recorded bassist in Jazz history. He’s worked with Miles, Herbie Hancock, Harry Connick Jr., Roberta Flack, Quincy Jones, A Tribe Called Quest, and the list goes on. To learn more about Ron Carter you can check out his official website: http://www.roncarter.net/officialSite.html
